We are proud to share that the Iberá Provincial Reserve is featured in Time magazine’s 2024 issue of the World’s Places, a list of 100 extraordinary destinations to explore. This recognition highlights not only the stunning beauty of the wetlands, but also the positive impact of one of the most ambitious rewilding projects on the planet.
It’s the perfect time to visit one of Argentina’s top tourist destinations that stands out for its natural beauty and its landmark conservation effort.
An exemplary rewilding project
The Iberá Wetlands is the largest protected area in Argentina and is home to one of the world’s most comprehensive rewilding projects. This effort, led by Rewilding Argentina, has proven to be a resounding success, and its benefits go beyond the borders of the 5,000-square-mile reserve.
Since 2021, after more than 25 years of hard work and dedication, foundational species have been reintroduced into the ecosystem, including the giant anteater, the swamp deer, the collared peccary, and, most notably, the jaguar. The latter, which had not been seen in the region in 70 years, has returned to the Wetlands thanks to the release of nine specimens. Today, it is estimated that there are around 25 jaguars roaming one of the largest wetlands on Earth. According to Sebastián Di Martino, Conservation Director at Rewilding Argentina, the jaguar population is growing rapidly in Iberá, which means that in a few years visitors will have the real possibility of spotting this majestic predator in its natural habitat.
The impact on local communities: promoting a more sustainable economy
The success of this project has not only revitalized the ecosystem but has also transformed the local economy. Communities that used to rely on cattle ranching, a marginal and unsustainable activity, are now finding new opportunities in nature tourism and wildlife watching. This shift to a more sustainable economy not only benefits the environment, but also the people who live in the region.
The effect of rewilding in the Iberá Wetlands has inspired conservationists around the world. Rewilding Argentina has shared experiences and best practices with conservation organizations globally, including recent efforts on the U.S.-Mexico border to reintroduce jaguars to their historic habitat in the southern United States.
