Fauna of the Iberá Wetlands

These wetlands are a great refuge for wildlife in the Corrientes province. The diversity of local fauna includes:

Amphibians

More than 40 species inhabit the Iberá Wetlands, including the cururú toad, the bramble frog and the climbing frog.

Fish

Did you know that about 125 different species of fish live in rivers and lagoons? Some of the most popular are dorado, surubí, pacu, sábalo and boga.

Reptiles

They are the largest predators in the region, and about 60 species can be spotted in the Iberá Wetlands. The Iberá National Park and locals are collaborating in a series of projects to preserve the black caiman and the yacaré caiman, which are in danger of extinction.

Birds

At least 344 species of birds fly over these wetlands. The southern screamer (chajá), the white heron, the black-crowned heron, the southern lapwing (tero) and the chiflón are some of them.

Mammals

You will probably come across a few capybaras during your visit, but these are not the only mammals that inhabit the area: the maned wolf (aguará-guazú), the river wolf or true otter and the swamp deer also take shelter in the wetlands.

If you are eager to get away from the routine and noise of the city, these videos of the Iberá Wetlands are the perfect way to decide your next bucket-list item.
